If a file was deleted unexpectedly—or you’re not sure why it disappeared—the cause is usually related to Trash behavior, shared folder permissions, account activity, or sync actions across devices. This guide explains the most common reasons files get deleted and how to recover them when possible.
Most deleted files are moved to Trash, where they remain for 30 days.
Open Trash from the sidebar
Look for the missing file
Restore it if it’s still available
Use search inside Trash if you have many items
If the file is in Trash, it can be restored instantly.
If the file belonged to a shared folder:
The owner may have removed or reorganized it
The owner may have deleted the file entirely
If you lost access to the shared folder, the file disappears from your dashboard
Only the owner can restore or re-share files from shared folders.
Sometimes files are moved accidentally.
Search for the file by name
Check recently used folders
Look inside shared folders
Sort by Last Modified to see recent changes
If the file was moved, it will not appear in Trash.
If you use multiple devices:
Deleting a file on one device removes it everywhere
Moving a file on one device updates all devices
Offline actions may sync later and override changes
Review recent activity on your other devices if something changed unexpectedly.
If the file never finished uploading:
It may appear briefly, then disappear
Large or unstable uploads may fail silently
Try re-uploading the file
Check your upload history if available
Failed uploads do not go to Trash.
In rare cases, files may be removed automatically if:
They violate platform policies
Suspicious activity is detected
A public link is abused or flagged
You will typically receive a security alert if this occurs.
If your account reached its storage limit:
New uploads may fail
Some files may not appear
Upload attempts may create partial files that disappear
Freeing space can prevent unexpected file behavior.
Sometimes files appear missing due to loading or caching issues.
Refresh the page
Sign out and sign back in
Clear browser cache and cookies
Try another browser or device
If the file reappears, the issue was temporary.
A file cannot be restored if:
It was permanently deleted from Trash
It was deleted by the owner of a shared folder
It was removed due to a policy violation
It never finished uploading
Permanent deletions are irreversible.
