If a file shows the wrong version, recent changes disappear, or older content replaces newer content, the issue usually comes from sync conflicts, accidental overwrites, shared folder edits, or cached previews. This guide explains the most common causes and how to resolve versioning issues.
Version mismatches typically happen when:
Multiple devices edit the same file at different times
A shared folder collaborator overwrites your changes
A cached preview shows an outdated version
A sync conflict forces the system to keep one version
The file was replaced during upload
Understanding the cause helps prevent future overwrites.
If someone re-uploaded a file with the same name:
The new upload replaces the old version
The timestamp updates to the new upload time
Previous content may be lost unless backed up
Ask collaborators if they re-uploaded the file.
In shared folders:
Anyone with Edit permission can overwrite files
A collaborator may have saved an older version
Someone may have replaced the file entirely
Check the folder’s activity log if available.
If you use multiple devices:
Offline edits may overwrite newer online versions
A device with outdated data may upload an older file
Sync delays can cause temporary mismatches
Make sure all devices are online and fully synced.
Sometimes the file is correct, but the preview is old.
Clear cached images and files
Refresh the preview
Try another browser
If the file looks correct elsewhere, the issue was cached data.
If duplicates exist:
You may be opening an older copy
Shared folders may contain multiple versions
Search results may show outdated files
Sort by Last Modified to find the newest version.
In rare cases:
Suspicious edits may trigger a rollback
A corrupted upload may be replaced with the last good version
You may receive a security alert if this occurs.
During high traffic or unstable connections:
The system may temporarily show an older version
Sync may take longer to update across devices
Refreshing after a few minutes often resolves this
If the version updates after waiting, the issue was sync delay.
A previous version cannot be restored if:
It was overwritten by a new upload
It was replaced in a shared folder
It was deleted and removed from Trash
It was never fully uploaded
Permanent overwrites cannot be undone.
